Instgram RunnerHitting the Pavement. East Freetown, Massachusetts. Instagram is a photo-sharing application for smartphones which combines social networking applications with easy to use filters and options for personalizing your photographs. It’s a new heavy hitter, but it’s easy to understand why instagram won the crown. Its advent matched the infancy of the newer better digital cameras on phones. Facebook itself acquired the company in mid- 2012, which many called a move to conquer the competition.
Imagine photography as recent as 15 years ago. Put film in the camera, snap the shots, have them developed, etc. Then, after all that, you had to scan them and put them onto the sites. Now, you have between the Web 2.0 move and the integration of sites with all their apps and gadgets an empty niche which was created for one-step user friendly app. What was once a time consuming hobby became a nearly instantaneous activity.
After six months on the iPhone, Instagram had reached 5 Million users and had a huge amount of cultural buzz. Being a follow up release for Android built on that platform, it gained 1 million users on the first day and 5 million before the week was out.
Purists will always have their digital, or even film cameras, but for the rest of us, the incredible success of instagram with its ease of taking and sharing high quality photos.
Make sure that you have your settings right. The last thing you want is to waste time fussing with basics when inspiration strikes. Depending on location and proximity of the subject, you will be changing these often.
In the main photo screen, there are three main toggle options:
Remember, you can choose to public or private status on any public networking site. You can still be connected to others on social networking sites through key word searches, your phone’s contact list and even popular users the app will suggest for you itself.
Instagram is committed to joining location-based apps like Foursquare Yelp and Facebook Places so you’ll need to decide whether you want your pictures to appear automatically.
The Home screen is where your feed is housed, with your updates easily accessible. You will have the option to comment on photos similar to your Tumblr or Flickr feed. Intuitive menus, nuts and bolts, and news streams make instagram useful.
Here’s a Cheat sheet:
Once you hit “click” on the main screen, you’ll have the option to filter the shot, delete it, or automatically upload it to your public or private feed. At this point the connections you made to you other networking services kick in. While the image itself is preserved in the Instagram cloud for later use, the service also sends a one-time push through of the image to the sites and apps you’ve specified, and your phone saves everything.
Make sure that you know your passwords and that you have not inadvertently changed a password to another networking site.
While the point and click nature of a smartphones camera is integral to Instagram’s popularity there are also some built in attractions that give it extra appeal for its users. Instagram creates a new dimension in memory creation, that of the effect. Effects in photos today try to mimic the look of old time photography with its grittiness and allure.
Since Instagram catches your feed’s photos in the cloud, just as most phone image apps, you may need to download then for offline access. All in all, Instagram is an enjoyable utility which will be useful for years to come. Try getting through your Facebook feed without artsy breakfast food pictures!
