Newborn photography is one of those subjects that makes everybody smile. A skilled newborn photographer can create memories that really will last a lifetime, and will make a whole lot of people feel all warm and fuzzy in the meantime. Of course, classic newborn photography doesn’t just happen all on its own. There is a certain amount of staging and preparation that must take place in order to capture that perfect shot. But when is the best time to take newborn photos?
Needless to say, there isn’t a huge window when it comes to newborn photography. A newborn isn’t a newborn for very long and if you don’t get on it and have some pictures taken you’ll miss your opportunity. Different photographers will have different opinions when the absolute best time is, but generally speaking you’ll want to get something set up within the first few weeks after the baby is born.
After that, he or she will start looking less and less like a newborn with each passing day. Not that there is anything wrong with baby pictures, but they are two different things. The newborn look that so many people seem to love is usually only around for a short time.
Time of Day
Many photographers suggest a morning session for newborn photography, but there really is no definitive right or wrong answer. As long as the baby is well-rested and fed and happy, the session can commence and will usually be completed as planned. Once the crying starts and the baby gets fussy and cranky, the likelihood of getting any usable shots is virtually zero.
As you can imagine, the length of the actual photo session won’t be very long when a newborn is involved. Generally, about 15 minutes to half an hour is about all the time a good photographer needs to get the right shots before the baby becomes over stimulated. If you want a photo shoot that includes different backdrops or outfits, you may have to schedule more than one session to get it all done right.
What About Families?
It’s usually possible to squeeze other members of the family into the shots but you will want to start with just the baby at the start. Newborn photography should always begin with the newborn and then include others once the great solo pictures have been taken. Preparing to feed the baby during the session may help keep him relaxed and happy.
